Create Your Customization Boxes in 5 Easy Steps

Customizable cardboard boxes are needed for many occasions. For example, when you want to package a handmade gift but cannot find a standard cardboard box that would fit around it. Or when you have your own homemade business and want something especially unique and functional. In such scenarios, it is good to create your customizable boxes. Custom boxes have a lot of benefits. Not only do they cater to needs of your product and keep it safe, but they also help in establishing your unique identity and creativity. There are many ways to DIY a custom cardboard box. Not only can you DIY this for actual use, but you can also use this as a mock-up sample to get bulk custom boxes manufactured from your packaging company. So if you have been wondering how you can create a custom box, read on for more details.

  1. Find a Piece of Cardboard:

The first thing you need to do to start off on your custom box is to find a cardboard sheet. This is fairly easy. If you are making a smaller box, you can easily find new corrugated cardboard sheets from an art store or a DIY store. These sheets come in the brown color as well as other colors. In fact, many of the art stores also hold printed and patterned corrugated cardboard sheet.Another option is to recycle an old cardboard carton. Find a carton that is sturdy enough and is still in good shape. Using an Exacto knife, split open the sides and the tabs so the cardboard sheet can lie flat. Now cut out a uniform rectangular or square piece out of it on which you can start building your template.

  1. Customize or Decorate if Needed:

You need to think ahead about the design of your customized box. Will it have a die cut window? A pattern? Colorful edges etc.? If yes, now is the time to modify the sheet according to it. For example, if you want a patterned cardboard box, you may not want to wrap one side of the cardboard sheet in a patterned scrapbooking paper or patterned gift wrapping paper. Or if you wanted colorful edges, now is the time to stick a colored contact paper on the edges of the cardboard sheet. If you wanted a die cut window, find the pattern for the window and stick it on the cardboard sheet where you want the window to be.

  1. Print The Box Net:

Finally, find a cardboard box style that appeals to you and looks for its net. You will have to print this net on a piece of paper and transfer it to your cardboard sheet. If you sheet is bigger than an A4 paper, you will have to custom draw the net on the cardboard sheet.

  1. Draw Lines for Flaps and Tabs:

Draw the lines for the net. Make sure you don’t leave out the flaps and tabs that will be glued or taped together to hold the box together.

  1. Score & Fold:

Use glue or tape to hold them together. This will ensure maximum sturdiness for your box. If you find making your customization box hard, you can also get your box ordered from a packaging company.
